As many a wonderful thing, Soca was born in Trinidad. Soca is a portmanteau of the words "Soul" and "Calypso". Lord Shorty from Trinidad is credited to be the progenitor of soca music, and he was known for experimenting with incorporating local "chutney music" (Indo-Caribbean) and Indian musical intruments such as the dholak, dhantal and tablas.

Soca has become a forerunner in Anglo-Caribbean music and culture, and has been gaining international popularity alongsige other popular Caribbean musical styles such as reggae and calypso. Soca is the primary musical force driving the modern-day carnvials of the Caribbean.
